Fish Oil Intake, how much - Experts recommendation

Many people have asked me how much exactly to take, I often tell them how much is dependent on what you're using it for and how are you using it.
As i don't have a crystal ball to foresee everyone's circumstances, i'll put together articles of what most experts have to say about the dosage of fish oil.

These are establish authors who have made a name for themselves in the fitness community across the world.

Charles Poliquin -
Our “cavemen” ancestors used to consume a diet that had a 1 to 1 ratio of Omega 6s to Omega 3s. Today, the typical American diet has a ratio of 50:1. Is that progress?

When we do not possess the optimal 1:1 ratio, cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke risks increase dramatically. Even if you agree with some authors that a 6:1 ratio is more realistic, it is clear that the vast majority of people in the modern era are not getting enough “Omega” in their diet.

Consume 30 to 45 grams of fish oil a day. Our Paleolithic ancestors consumed 300-400 grams of Omega 3s a week. Make sure they are free of heavy metals and solvents such as hexanes.

Lyle Mcdonald -

Q: I read in quite a lot of places that fish oil capsules or cod liver oil are a great supplement for controlling inflammation and improving nutrient partitioning, but no one gives any information about dosing. I have no idea how much of this stuff to ingest. Have you formed any guidelines as a result of your research?

A: A fairly standard dose of fish oil in the studies is the equivalent of 6X1 gram capsules. The average capsule has 180 mg epa and 120 dha so 6 capsules will provide 1020 mg epa and 720mg dha for a total of 1.8 grams of total fish oil. I would consider this basically the minimum daily amount that would be beneficial on any level.

Some work has identified that the body will hit a limit (in terms of plasma saturation) on DHA at 1.2 grams per day which is the equivalent of 10X1 gram fish oil capsules. That would also provide 1.8 grams EPA for a total of 3 grams per day of fish oil. Under most conditions, I think this is more than enough.

A friend who uses fish oiils to control her arthritis will often go as high as 15X1 gram capsules although I haven’t seen that supported in the literature. I’d note that higher doses are not better here (although some are currently recommending absurd amounts). Excessive fish oil can impair the body’s ability to mount a proper immune response, as well as impairing insulin release.

Carlson’s fish oil contains roughly the equivalent of 4X1 gram fish oil capsules per tsp., I don’t know the values on cod liver oil offhand.

My current generic recommendation is the middle level, 10X1 gram capsules per day for 3 grams total fish oil. This should provide maximal benefits (in terms of partitioning and health) with minimum negatives. Individuals trying to control a specific excessive inflammatory condition may wish to experiment with higher doses (15X1 grams capsules or 3-4 tsp Carlson’s fish oil per day).

Dr. John Berardi -

Tip: Fish Oil Rules

“I consider fish oil to be an essential supplement for fat loss.

Data from the University of Western Ontario shows that fish oil supplementation increases lean body mass (during non-dieting conditions), increases BMR (by up to 400kcal/day), decreases inflammation, and improves the ratio of fat/carb oxidized (sparing carbs, burning fat).

Recommended dose: Start with 6-10g per day of total fish oil (assuming 30% EPA and DHA).”

Hope this helps in your fish oil dosing, so that you find a level optimum to your lifestyle, diet and goals.

Yours in health - Louis.

Betaine HCL - What is it and how do you use it?

I'm a big advocate that supplements should not be used unless your diet is sound. That being said, for the most gym rats and health enthusiast, we tend to follow certain diets which has a certain amount of proteins and fats that are essential to our health, performance and physique.

But here is the deal breaker with whole food, sub optimal digestion and absorption into our body which translates to lousy gains in our training and our progress.

We know that our stomach has acids to break down food - Hydrochloric acids, so that our body is able to absorb the nutrients from it. This over time may diminish and sometimes we've end up undigested food - progress gone down the drain literally.

Deficency in the potency and strength of our stomach acids will lead to many things -

Common Symptoms Of Low Hydrochloric Acid

* Bloating or belching, especially after eating
* Burning in the stomach, especially after eating
* Fullness or heaviness in the stomach after eating
* Nausea after eating or taking supplements
* Intestinal gas
* Indigestion
* Bad breath
* Diarrhea or constipation
* Food allergies
* Itching around the rectum
* Weak or cracked fingernails
* Dilated blood vessels in the cheeks or nose (in nonalcoholics)
* Skin break-outs or acne
* Iron deficiency
* Chronic intestinal parasites
* Undigested food in the stool
* Chronic candida infection

Diseases Associated With Low Hydrochloric Acid

* Asthma
* Diabetes
* Osteoporosis
* Arthritis
* Hepatitis
* Eczema
* Acne rosacea
* Psoriasis
* Gallbladder disease
* Herpes
* Hives
* Hyperthyroid
* Hypothyroid
* Thyrotoxicosis
* Autoimmune disorders
* Lupus erythematosus
* Myasthenia gravis
* Pernicious anemia
* Celiac disease
* Sjogren ’s Syndrome
http://www.cocoonnutrition.org/catalog/page_betainehcl.php

I don't really believe in all of that listed, neither will you because i don't think you've ever came across or even heard of the names before, but i'm just listing it out for you in case if you have been diagnosed with such complications

But what I find that is true is the symptoms and its especially telling with my stool - or crap if you call it that.

I've been doing the low carb diet for a long time and many times i've noticed that my stool/crap has many floating bits which has a dark brown color to it. Not to sound gross or graphic but it is an indicator; a very important one which tells you about your digestion.

Another sign is your farts/flatucence, i believe many of us have let out a stinker before and its not pleasant. Usually it comes with bloating and feeling of indigestion, after heavy protein laden meal - think chicken/eggs/beef.

All this will sometimes lead to being extremely constipated even with much green vegetables.

If you do have these common problems, it means that your digestion is sub optimal and you'll need help with your stomach acid.

Betaine HCL is designed for such purposes and I've personally experience many positive exffects with it and have improved my digestion. This includes many of my friends who are on Betaine HCL supplementation to aid with their digestion.

If you're interested in taking up the supplementation or have bought, here are some direction of use -

Directions For Use of Betaine HCL
When using Betaine HCL with Pepsin for the first few times, please be sure to follow the directions carefully. Always take Betaine HCL at the start of the meal! If taken without food, stomach burning may result.

1. At the very start of the meal, take one capsule of Betaine HCL. Monitor how your stomach feels during and after eating. Should any burning or heaviness occur, or if burning has been present previously (before taking the supplement) and is now worsened with the use of the Betaine HCL, do not continue using this supplement!!! This is an indication that your stomach is overproducing acid, or that your stomach lining may be damaged. In such cases, please consider the use of Alkabase, Gastric Complex-HP and/or Mastica, to normalize excess acid production and heal the stomach lining.

2. If the first dose of Betaine HCL produced no noticeable stomach discomfort, try taking two capsules at the start of your next meal, again monitor for burning and or heaviness during and after eating. If taking two capsules produces some discomfort, but one capsule does not, restrict yourself to one capsule at the start of each meal. If the two capsule dose produced no discomfort, try three capsules at the start of your next meal.

3. If all goes well when taking three capsules at the start of each meal, stay with that dosage, most individuals will not require increasing the dosage to four capsules. Regular use of supplemental hydrochloric acid will in most cases "re-train" the stomach to produce higher concentrations of acid on its own. This process may take anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the individual. The most significant indication that acid production is improving is that Betaine HCL supplementation can no longer be comfortably tolerated.

An Example:
After having used the Betaine HCL for eleven weeks, at a dosage of two capsules per meal, without any discomfort, Joan now notices that she feels a burning sensation when taking the two capsules. She therefore reduces her dosage to one capsule at mealtime. After several more weeks, even one capsule per meal produces burning and Joan discontinues altogether. This is a sign that the stomach has been re-trained to produce adequate concentrations of hydrochloric acid without the further need for supplementation.

When consuming meals that contain little or no protein, much less hydrochloric acid is needed by the stomach to process its contents. Please keep this in mind when using Betaine HCL as a supplement and modify your usage accordingly.

http://www.modernherbalist.com/betaine.html
The burn or heaviness may vary for person to person, some have taken 2-3 capsules of 650grams and yet not feel anything, however do not be alarmed.

What is most important is that your feeling of bloatedness and extremely stink farts start to subside, check your stool for floating bits and see if it comes out smoothly.

That is what i've discovered so far with feedbacks and personal experience, if you have a different one, feel free to let me know how is your experience with it.

Do we really need Greens/Superfood Supplements?

Do you really need Green/Superfood Supplements?

In my honest opinion, absolutely not! That is unless you can consume at least 4-5 big servings of organic vegetables in your diet daily and reduce your acid forming food intake - which is impossible really.

http://www.candidasupport.org/RESOURCES/candida-and-ph/

This is a chart to see what is sways your body towards acidity and akaline ( Acid/Base)

Looking at the chart and reflecting on your diet, its hard not to notice that most of your food aren't base forming to neutralize the acidity. And looking upon my own diet, as a regular gymrat, I can't help but not notice how little base forming foods i've been eating all the time, especially when we have our meals outside most of the time.

To give you a good example, I'll share with you a sample of my daily diet on a good day -

Meal 1 - 1 Cup Milk + 1 Cup Mixed Nuts Museli + 2 scoops of Whey

Meal 2 (Pre workout meal) - 4 half boiled eggs + 1 cup of Ice Coffe with evaporated milk less sugar

Meal 3 (Post workout meal) - Fried Fish Soup - 40-50g of Fish + 20grams of Green vegetables + 1-2 piece of tofu

Meal 4 (Post-Post Workout meal) - 1 Steak + 1-2 stalks of Carrots

Meal 5 - 2 Cups hams + 2 cups Carrots

I think many of you, have diet some what similiar to mine. Taking more meat but forgetting the vegetables but don't blame yourself and hang your head low in guilt.
Even if you go outside to order chicken rice, a typical plate of $5-6 worth of meat only contains only a little bit of cumcumber.

So whats the big deal, with the Ph balance?

Excess acidity forces the body to borrow minerals - including sodium,calcium, potassium and magnesium -from vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the acid and to safely
remove it from the body. As a result, the body can suffer severe and prolonged
‘corrosion’ due to high acidity - a condition that may go undetected for years.

It affects virtually every person in our society because of the way we live, theway we eat, the way we think, and the environment welive in. The result is an internal environment where dis-ease can easilymanifest, as opposed to a pH-balancedenvironment which allows for normalbody functions - necessary for the bodyto resist dis-ease. It is true that if wehave a healthy body, we will maintain sufficient alkaline reserves to meet emergency demands.

http://articlesofhealth.blogspot.com/2007/05/excess-acidity-weakens-all-body-systems.html

Excess body acidity (acidosis) is thought to be the first step towards premature aging, interfering with eyesight and memory, and creating wrinkling, age spots, dysfunctioning hormone systems, and a host of age related phenomena. Also, cancerous cells grow well in acidic mediums.

In fact, studies are confirming that body acidity is implicated in all diseases.

Initial signs of Body tissue acidity include:-
· Feeling weak, tired and having low energy.
· Needing more sleep.
· Experiencing agitation, anxiety, panic attacks and depression.
· Having skin problems eg. Eczema, acne and hives.
· Feeling nauseous.
· Experiencing heartburn (many people are taking ant-acids these days).
· Suffering generalised aches and pains,and
· Diarrhoea or constipation or bloating.
· Cramping before or during periods.
· Loss of libido.
· More dental decay.

Signs of long-term body acidity are far more serious: -
· Osteoporosis.
· Chronic digestive problems.
· Poor immunity, including fungal and bacterial infections.
· Arthritis, joint and ligament problems.
· Kidney stones, kidney diseases and gout.
· Heart problems and circulation problems.
· Cancers.

I don't wish to be a scare monger but if you're experiencing this, then something is terribly wrong and you may be eating "clean" and supposedly healthy but still you're experience all this terrible side effects.

From personal experience, when i stop short of taking greens for just 1 or 2 days, i'd get acne break outs here and there. I do feel tired and my sleep is just not as good as it use to be.

My only solution that i can think of to ease these problem is to get more vegetables - which is quite hard because of the puny portion when you eat outside or try to add more vegetables and eliminate high acid forming foods.
If all else fails, then i'll just turn to two teaspoon of Green supplements which i can easily down before bed.

If you have other better ways that are convient, feel free to share with me.

So do you really need Greens/Superfood supplement now?

Fishy business..

We all know we need fish oil as a vital supplementation in our modern diet, unless of course you're a fish monger who sells lots of fresh wild salmon and have 4-5 meals of salmon a day.

The beneifts of fish oil is numerous and even for myself, I treat it as the one supplement that i need to get all the time; its no more a supplement to me - more like a food, making up a big portion of my dietary fats daily.

So having said that, many people may be wondering what is the difference between liquid fish oil and softgel capsules.

I've been taking fish oil for a very long time and i've came to a few conclusions regarding quality and methods of consuming it can make a lot of difference.

Lets start with some basic facts about fish oil - The two active component in these esstiential fatty acids are the EPA/DHA -

EPA DHA is an essential fatty acid which stands for docosahexaenoic acid
and eicosapentaenoic acid. This essential fatty acid is an Omega 3 fat, which is
found in cold water fish. EPA DHA are highly unsaturated fat because of they
contain 6 and 5 double bond s on their long structural chain. These
polyunsaturated fats play a very important role with the function of our
bodies. EPA and DHA are vital nutrients and may be taken to maintain healthy
function of the following: Brain and Retina- DHA is a building block of
tissue in the brain and retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural
transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain
function. DHA is found in the retina of the eye and taking DHA may be
necessary for maintaining healthy levels of DHA for normal eye function.

http://www.drhoffman.com/page.cfm/84

So now getting you those who aren't informed about fish oil up to speed, i shall divulge some interesting facts about the conclusions that you might not know.

EPA/DHA ratio is the one thing that makes the fish oil potent, some say quantity some say quality(potency). Well i say both! Potentcy + Quantity, to get the best benefits from it.

Here is how I calculate my selection for fish oils -

On the back of any packaging of fish oil, for softgels the typical dosing at the back states about 2 capsules a day while for the liquid ones 1 teaspoon.

But to see its effects, you'll need at least 15 grams a day - 3 teaspoons or 15 capsules, so serving size is important for me - normall what you see is 60 softcaps which only going to last me for 4 days.

Also most generic fish oils you see, the EPA/DHA ratio is 180/120. As explained earlier, potency is equally as important as the potency gives the fish oil its worth.

Pharmceutical grade has typically the EPA/DHA atio of 400/200, thats almost 2 times that of the generic ones. If you're taking 15 of the generic ones, you'd need about only 7 to make up for the nuritents it provide.

Now that you know how to gauge your fish oil's potency and value lets move on to the difference between softgels and liquid fish oil.

Lets start with softgel

Softgels are clear soft capsules in which the oil is contained, its small light but delicate to moisture and heat. Softgels are great for travelling or when you're on the go, at work or travelling its the best way to carry around your fish oil.

Softgels too has its draw backs, first of all its big - well big for some who are not use to consuming 5 at a go. You get fish burps; fishy aftertaste when you digest the capsules and your food. Another thing to note is that because it is a softgel, its subjected to moisture and heat and can melt if you leave it directly in the sun or maybe if you sit on it.

Liquid Fish oil -

Liquid fishoils are essentially the same just that they come in the bottle, they can be stored easily in a fridge and taken out to when you need to consume it. Most liquid fish oil has a lemon flavor added but with experience you don't really taste anything and its not thick like cod liver oil so you can down it fast without even tasting anything.

Liquid fish oil gives the best value with potency, the bigger bottles i've seen comes with EPA/DHA 800/500 ratio for 480ml. Which means if you take 15 servings daily(3 teaspoons), a bottle can last you for 32 days. The one thing I like about liquid fish oil, is because you can digest it faster than softcaps and the nature of consumption, no fishy burps - i use to think it was normal till i went liquid.

Liquid fish oil has its draw backs, if you spill the liquid on your fingers or on the table top and forget to wash it, you'll have a stale fishy smell. Also its not convient for people on the go or with people who don't have a fridge where they spend most of their time - work/school/travelling.

So lets evaluate and see the pros and cons side by side -

Liquid Pros

-Bang for buck

-No fishy burps

-Easy to down - 3 teaspoons a day

-Most servings/savings

Liquid Cons

- Needs a fridge

- Bottle, hard to carry around

-Stale fishy smell if you don't wash your hands

Soft Gel Pros-

-Easy to carry around

-Easier consumption with meals(if you're out at work)

-Useful for travelling

Soft Gel Cons-

-Fishy burps(nasty!)

-Subjected to heat and moisture

-Not the best value for money

I would personally recommend liquid one for the best potency and savings but we all know we don't have the luxury to have a fridge at work or even working behind a desk all the time. However if you're mostly home, take the liquid one and if you're always out and on the go then softgels are a great way to remember to take your fish oil.

For Honey Lovers!

To all those who love honey but finding it expensive - I have the best deals for you.

Unique MGO™ Manuka Honey is collected from a New Zealand plant called Leptospermum scoparium. For quite some time the unique manuka honey anti-bacterial activity was known and measured by a general measurement of its biological effect.
What was causing the antibacterial activity remained unknown for almost 15 years.

The discovery came from the research group led by Professor Thomas Henle, University of Dresden (Germany).

“We unambiguously demonstrate for the first time that Dietary Methylglyoxal is directly responsible for the anti-bacterial activity of manuka honey”

(reported Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, January, 2008)

So far MGO™ Manuka honey has been the only food in the world found with such a significant Dietary Methylglyoxal content ranging from 20mg/kg to over 800mg/kg. In contrast all other honeys worldwide tested have ranged between 1 to 10 mg/kg, other foods range from 0 to 50mg/kg with coffee and cocoa being the highest.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is recommended [1] for a healthy diet because it contains the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursors to eicosanoids that reduce inflammation throughout the body. Fish do not actually produce omega-3 fatty acids, but instead accumulate them from either consuming microalgae that produce these fatty acids, as is the case with fish like herring and sardines, or, as is the case with fatty predatory fish, by eating prey fish that have accumulated omega-3 fatty acids from microalgae.

Betaine HCL -

Betaine hydrochloride is an acidic form of betaine, a vitamin-like substance found in grains and other foods. Betaine hydrochloride is recommended by some doctors as a supplemental source of hydrochloric acid for people who have a deficiency of stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria).

A deficiency of gastric acid secretion increases the likelihood and severity of certain bacterial and parasitic intestinal infections. A normal stomach’s level of gastric acid is sufficient to destroy bacteria.1 In one study, most fasting people who had normal acidity in the stomach had virtually no bacteria in the small intestine. Some bacterial colonization of the stomach occurred in people who had low levels of hydrochloric acid.2

Moreover I do not have any overheads, no rental and no staff to pay off, i can keep the prices low to bring bigger value to you!

Cheaper supplements for all!

This blogshop was created to bring down and compete grotesque prices of questionable potency of supplements in Singapore.
This brings more savings to you as a consumer and a avid health enthusiast.
I know, because I've been investing so much money in them yet i find that the prices are just not as competitive as online.

Buying from shops has it's pros and cons -

Pros -

Fast/hassle free transaction.
"warranty" that you can return if the product is found to be bad.
A selection of variety of products.
Recommendation of which products might suit you.

Cons -

Expensive markup - sometimes too expensive.
May not have all the brand that you wish to use.
Cannot get reviews from consumers who've tried it.

Buying online too as its pros and cons -

Pros -

Cheaper that what you get in stores.
A very wide selection of products.
Reviews and rating of products according to consumers

Cons

Hassle with transaction - ( Credit card and photo ID verfication)
Credit card may not be accepted
Shipping can take more than 1 week for the cheaper option
Packages maybe lost and more time wasted just to get what you need.
No exchange if the product gets damage in transit or if the product is found bad.

Being a consumer myself, i've experience this and i wish to bring the right balance of service and prices.

Prices on the products i'm bringing in will not be as cheap as online stores overseas but i'll try to match cent for cent with local online and brick and mortar stores locally and yet give the same standard that retail shops offer - product recommendation, ease of transaction and no waiting time for shippment

I want to bring the best value to the everyday folks.
